Bad Night for Obama? Republicans Sweep Virginia
Republicans sweep the three statewide elections in Virginia.
Republicans won all three statewide races in Virginia Tuesday, winning an off-year election sweep that restored Republican dominance in a state where years of Democratic advances culminated in Barack Obama’s 2008 victory in the state.
The Virginia results guaranteed that Tuesday’s off-year elections would, at best, send a mixed signal for President Obama on the eve of the one-year anniversary of his election.
Obama administration spokesman Robert Gibbs was playing down expectations as voting wound down on a busy day of off-year elections for state and local offices and open congressional seats in New York and California. “I don’t think, looking at the two gubernatorial races, you can draw with any great insight what’s going to happen a year from now,” declared Gibbs, with regard to Tuesday’s statewide votes in Virginia and New Jersey.
