The Honeycutt Urban Initiative
The Democrat Party has monopolized urban communities, this is partly attributed to the inability of the Republican Party to effectively reach out to urban communities. I believe by building a strong relationship this can be changed. Urban communities lack the necessary resources for development, partly because Democrats have taken for granted the vote of urban communities, this is an obvious fact if you look a look at the state of Urban America. I plan to change this dependence on government by strengthening and empowering the urban areas thus making them self-reliant. I plan to help rebuild our urban areas within District 13th by working with community leaders to figure out solutions that will lower unemployment in urban areas, offer financial Literacy, better education for our children and decent transportation to increase job access. This agenda targets low income families and stresses self-sufficiency. Residents of the 13th District deserves a servant leader, a leader who will respond to their needs. Join me in rebuilding our community and together we can build a stronger, more inclusive district.
Unemployment:
We must have a work force that is capable of meeting the demands of the jobs that are available, which means we must offer up-to-date job training. I also will work with city developers and planners to support neighborhood retail and development in ways that reuses vacant lots to make our district more appealing to businesses.
Financial Literacy:
We can break the dependence and poverty cycle. I will work with local banks, businesses and colleges to offer programs ‘free of charge’ that teaches and places emphasis on financial literacy. Such programs should teach how to open a bank account, the different types of bank accounts, how to save money, how to invest money (CD’s, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, 401K etc.), ways to pay off debt, starting a small business, tools necessary to start a small business and how to draft a business plan/proposal.
Education:
In order to compete on a global market, minority kids need to be prepared. The current disadvantage is obvious and needs to change. Our current Congressman hasn’t advocated for our children, I will. We can get the necessary resources by getting businesses to invest in the education of our kids and giving parents a choice to choose, i.e. vouchers. We have to stress that schools focus more on individual development, strengths and weaknesses versus test. I will work with community leaders and parents to help foster a strong academic environment in all of our schools, for all of our children. Education is the key to success.
Transportation:
The lack of transportation in our district makes it increasingly difficult to look for unemployment, by increasing mobility, we can increase job access. It’s important that the residents of the 13th Congressional District have decent transportation. I will be an advocate for decent transportation, every growing community needs transportation.
Our Young Men and Women
Men:
Part of my initiative will pay close attention to the young men of the urban communities. Often these young men come back into the community with very little support or supervision because of the scarcity of resources, they return back to the life of crime. These men need rehabilitation programs that help them adjust as they re-enter society. I will support local leaders in organizing these programs so that these men can become responsible, contributing adults to our society.
Women:
Like our young men, our young women in urban areas also face issues that must be addressed. As a doctor I’ve seen many sad cases, which I plan to address once elected to Congress. Those issues include breast cancer, domestic violence, rape, single-parenting and abortion. I would like to work with church leaders and others to develop support groups for women throughout the district. I also plan to advocate for more funding for breast cancer research once elected to congress.
